Gemma Barbieri’s cat, named Rose after Billie Piper’s character from Doctor Who, had been a birthday gift for the charity shop worker. Rose then went missing in 2008 when the family were living in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, an event which has haunted Ms Barbieri ever since.

She said when she moved house in 2018, 10 years after Rose vanished, she felt “guilty” for it “in case she came home and we weren’t there for her.”

Ms Barbieri was therefore gobsmacked to receive a phone call informing her that Rose, now 14-years-old, had been found.

Rose was documented as a stray cat in the King’s Lynn region and was put into Cats Protection’s Downham Market Adoption Centre earlier this year.

Although what happened to her during the time she was missing remains unknown, she was reportedly healthy when she was discovered.

The cat was microchipped, but Ms Barbieri rejected the charity’s first phone call due to not being familiar with the number.

She said: “But it rang again almost immediately so I thought it might be important and should answer.

“I’ll always be grateful I did!

“I couldn’t believe it when they asked if my cat had gone missing in 2008.

“I just blurted out ‘Have you found Rose?’

“They said a black cat brought in as a stray had been scanned and the microchip showed that she was missing.

“I was so stunned, I was shaking.”

Ms Barbieri collected Rose as soon as she was done with work.

She added: “As soon I got Rose in the car, she was talking all the way home.

“She settled almost immediately when we arrived home.

“Within an hour she’d eaten, used the litter tray, explored the whole house and was laying purring on her back while I stroked her belly.

“She’s pretty much been purring ever since and has settled in completely.”

Rose was originally adopted as a kitten back in 2007 and Ms Barbieri has held out hope for her safe return ever since she disappeared a year later.

Since her reunion with Rose, she said she would “absolutely recommend microchipping to anyone getting a cat, because it works”.
