Woman found friend dead so took her bank card to buy McDonald's and scratchcards

A daughter has called the pickpocket inhuman for stealing from her mother when she found her body.

Terrilee Yates, 32, called paramedics when she discovered Jane Godfrey at her home in Greater Manchester last March, but then took her bank cards.

She used them to withdraw £300 so that she could buy a McDonald’s and some scratchcards.

Jane’s daughter Sadie Bird criticised Yates. She said: ‘To me that’s not human. You don’t find someone dead, take their bank cards and go spend money and the first place you go to is McDonald’s. She’s scum, she’s not human.’

Yates claimed Jane had given her permission to use the bank cards but later admitted four counts of fraud when the case came to court.

She was given 180 hours of community service as punishment, but Sadie wanted to see her go to jail.

She said: ‘It’s something you don’t even see in horror films.

‘I went round and [my mum’s] house looked like it had been rifled through, her bank statements were everywhere, her bag was empty, her purse was empty, there was no laptop.

‘I mentioned to the police that I couldn’t find any of her bank cards.

‘They did their checks and found that it was Terrilee who had taken the card and gone to the petrol station and McDonald’s.

‘My mum didn’t deserve this. I’m not saying my mum was a saint, nobody is, but she didn’t deserve for her to do that to her.

‘If she (Yates) wanted money she could have got money, but for her to just leave her there? I don’t understand.’

Jane died as the UK went into lockdown last year, so Sadie was not able to commemorate her mum’s life or access support while grieving.

She said: ‘I couldn’t even have a proper funeral because of Covid, nobody was allowed to come.

‘Terrilee didn’t get to see all that, she just carried on, she was out living her life. It’s killed me.’

Sadie said her mum was bubbly, cocky, loud and funny with ‘a heart of gold’ which ‘got her into trouble’.

She said: ‘She would do anything for anyone, even a stranger, and she (Yates) took advantage of her.’
