Woman dies in 'awful' accident after being hit by lorry
A woman has died after she was hit by a lorry in Hackney this morning.
Police and paramedics found the woman in a critical condition after the accident in east London, but she could not be saved.
The Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville said: ‘Cycling and then walking back to the Town Hall from Stamford Hill, terrible to see & hear about the incident in Mare Street.
‘I would urge everyone to let the emergency services respond to what is now a crime scene.
‘Thoughts with all those directly involved in this awful accident.’
The crash happened on Mare Street near the junction with Grayham Road.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Officers from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Hackney.
‘Police were called to Mare Street junction with Grayham Road, E8 at 10.26am on July 11 following reports of a collision.
‘Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a female pedestrian in a critical condition following a collision with a HGV.
‘She was pronounced dead at the scene a short while later.
‘Police are in the process of informing her next of kin.
‘A post-mortem examination will be held in due course. Formal identification awaits.
‘The driver involved stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries. No arrests have been made.
‘Officers remain on scene. Local road closures are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
‘Any witnesses are asked to call police via 101 quoting reference 2750/11 July.
