Thames Valley Police confirmed that a black Nissan car and a white van crashed near junction 12 for Theale shortly just before 08:45am.

The woman, who was in her 60s, died at the scene while two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The road remains closed in both directions between Reading and Theale and is likely to remain closed for most of Monday.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

Thames Valley Police tweeted: “Following a road traffic collision on the M4 this morning near to Junction 12, tragically, a woman has died at the scene.

“We are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which occurred at approximately 8.40am”.

National Highways issued an update after roads were still closed four hours after the incident.

At 1:47pm, they said: “Traffic caught up within the M4 westbound closure J11 to J12 are being released past the scene in one lane.

“Thank you for your continued patience throughout this ongoing incident. You should start moving shortly.”
