William is an avid football fan and, as the President of the Football Association (FA), he has been keenly supporting England throughout the Euro 2020 Championship. He took both his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and his eldest son Prince George to England’s match against Germany, which pushed them through to the quarter-finals. When England won 2-0, George was hailed as a lucky mascot by royal fans — prompting speculation that the Duke of Cambridge might bring his son with him again to watch tonight’s match against Denmark.

Kate will not be making an appearance at the game because she is currently self-isolating in line with Government guidelines.

While the Three Lions are the clear favourites to win among the bookies, with bet365 placing England at 8/11 to make the Euro 2020 final, this is not the first time the team have been disappointed and knocked out of an international tournament at the semi-finals.

In 2018, England lost in the semi-finals of the World Cup against Croatia, leaving fans up and down the country devastated.

But William shared a rousing message on Twitter after the 2-1 loss.

He tweeted: “I know how disappointed @England must feel right now but I couldn’t be more proud of this team and you should hold your heads high.

“You’ve had an incredible #WorldCup, made history and gave us fans something to believe in.

“We know there is more to come from this @England team. W.”

This tweet had more than 62,000 likes and 10,000 retweets.

The Duke of Cambridge had shared a similar message after they secured a win in the quarter-finals against Sweden four days before.

William tweeted: “You wanted to make history @England and you are doing just that.

“This has been an incredible #WorldCup run and we’ve enjoyed every minute.”

However, his tweet ended on a more optimistic note at the time, and promised: “You deserve this moment — Football’s Coming Home! W.”

If England reach the final for Euro 2020, it will be the team’s first major tournament final since winning the World Cup in 1966.

William has often spoken out about his passion for the sport and his support for Aston Villa.

Last year, he said he even scared his three children when he became over-excited when watching his team’s match against West Ham.

Speaking at a screening of the FA Cup final, he recalled: “The nerves were the worst I’ve ever known.

“My children looked at me in horror as I was jumping off the sofa, screaming my head off.
