William’s four-word response to Harry’s bombshell news at Eugenie’s wedding

Kate Middleton attends Princess Eugenie’s wedding in 2018

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had some big news for the Royal Family when they attended Princess Eugenie’s wedding five years ago, and Prince William was overjoyed for them.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank tied the knot five years ago today on October 12 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, just a few months after Harry and Meghan’s own nuptials at the same venue.

At this point Meghan was in the early stages of pregnancy with the couple’s first child, and at the drinks reception in St George’s Hall Harry took the opportunity to tell William he was going to be an uncle.

In his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex recalled: “We whispered the news and Willy smiled and said ‘we must tell Kate’. She was across the room talking to Pippa. I said we could do it later, but he insisted.

“So we went and told Kate and she also gave us a big smile and hearty congratulations. They both reacted exactly as I’d hoped – as I’d wished.”

Harry and Meghan’s son Prince Archie was born the following year on May 6 2019, with his little sister Princess Lilibet arriving two years later on June 4 2021.

The couple declined to do the traditional photocall on the steps of London’s Portland Hospital after Archie was born, however a thrilled Harry gave an impromptu interview outside Windsor Castle, and his joy at becoming a father was clear to see.

He said: “I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy this morning, a very healthy baby boy. I haven’t been at many births.

“This is definitely my first birth – it was amazing, absolutely incredible. I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. And as every father and parent would say, your baby is absolutely amazing.”

Although the Sussexes may still be at loggerheads with most members of the Firm, they remain close to Eugenie and Jack, and also have a good relationship with Eugenie’s older sister Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

A source told People magazine: “They’re still the best of friends and talk constantly. This whole drama between him and Meghan and the rift with the rest of the family has been really stressful for the girls. It’s hard to watch because they see both sides of it.”

Their mothers Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson were also good pals, as they bonded over feeling like outsiders in royal circles.

The York sisters have both grown their families since Eugenie’s wedding day, as she and Jack welcomed their first son August on February 9 2021, with his little brother Ernest following on May 30 2023.

Beatrice married her partner Edo on July 17 2020, with the ceremony having to be stripped back with few guests owing to Covid-19 restrictions.

She gave birth to their daughter Sienna on September 18 2021.
