The Queen celebrates 70 years as monarch next year with a four-day weekend of royal events planned for June. Royal biographer Robert Lacey said the Duke of Cambridge will have to “swallow his pride and smile” alongside the Duchess of Sussex when members of the Royal Family gather on the palace’s balcony.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Mr Lacey said: “William has no choice, for example, but to swallow his pride and smile beside Meghan on next year’s Platinum Jubilee balcony.”

The royal historian added that it had been pointed out to William that “everyone has a difficult sister-in-law”.

Mr Lacey said: “According to one of my sources, it’s been pointed to him that everyone has a difficult sister-in-law.

“William’s response was to nod his head in sage acceptance.

“Then suddenly he broke out angrily. ‘But look at the way that bloody woman treated my staff — merciless!'”

In the updated edition of his book Battle of Brothers, Mr Lacey claims the rift between William and Prince Harry erupted over bullying allegations made by royal staff against Meghan, which she denies.

And speaking in new ITV documentary Harry and William: What Went Wrong?, the royal historian claimed the future King became suspicious Meghan “had an agenda” in the early days of her romance with his younger brother.

Mr Lacey said: “Someone close to William told me William felt from an early stage that Meghan had an agenda.”

Harry returned to Britain for only the second time since Megxit last week for the unveiling of a Princess Diana statue at Kensington Palace.

He and William put on a united front for the event on what would have been their late mother’s 60th birthday.

Meghan remained in California with their newborn daughter Lili and two-year-old son Archie.

Harry previously travelled to the UK in April for Prince Philip’s funeral.

The visit came weeks after the Sussexes, who quit royal duties last year, plunged the Royal Family into crisis with their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview.

The tell-all TV interview in March saw the pair make a set of astonishing claims, including racism accusations.

Harry went on to make further controversial comments about the royals in the following weeks.

The couple are widely expected to return to Britain for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

On February 6 2022, Her Majesty will have reigned as monarch for 70 years.

It is the first time a British sovereign will have reached such a landmark.

Throughout the year, the Queen and members of the Royal Family will travel around the country attending a range of events to mark the milestone, culminating with the Platinum Jubilee Weekend.

The four-day weekend will begin on the Thursday with Trooping the Colour.

A service of thanksgiving for the Queen’s reign will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral on the Saturday and a spectacular pageant will take place on Sunday.
