Harry, 36, announced last week via his Archewell website that he would release an autobiography in late 2022. The Duke of Sussex described the upcoming book as an “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his journey from childhood to the present day, including his marriage to Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, 39. According to historian Dr Edward Owens, Buckingham Palace is bracing for the revelations that may emerge from the memoir and are already considering how to respond.

William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, could be used as part of a charm offensive to mitigate any bad publicity from the book, the former lecturer at the University of Lincoln and author of ‘The Family Firm’ told Express.co.uk.

Dr Owens said there will already be some “anxiety at court” and the Royal Family will be “worried” about what Harry is going to say.

“This is another thing that they cannot control. The Royal Family are obsessed by control and when they can’t control events they are inevitably very anxious and even fearful,” he said.

“They are going to be celebrating William, Kate and their young family in direct opposition to Harry’s narrative.

“There is going to be a lot of positive attention devoted to the Cambridges and they will have their statements ready.”

Dr Owens likened such a strategy to that used by the Royal Family when the Queen’s uncle, former King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, published his memoir in 1951.

The book, ‘A King’s Story’, sent shockwaves through the Palace as it laid bare the details of the monarch’s controversial tenure on the throne.

Some of the main topics included his dramatic abdication of the throne in 1936, as well as his marriage to divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson, which sparked a constitutional crisis.

In the wake of the former King’s unprecedented revelations, Dr Owens says the Queen was lined up as a positive figure to capture the public’s attention.

“In direct response to Edward’s attention seeking with his memoir the Royal Family did a lot more promotion of the British Royal Family, especially around the young family of our current Queen,” he said.

“She was the antidote to Edward, she received more attention in 1948 and 1949 than she ever had before.

“The royals wanted to distract the British reading public away from Edward’s memoirs, and they thought that if they gave Elizabeth lots of good coverage that would act as a distraction.”

Queen Elizabeth succeeded her father, King George VI, as monarch after he died in in 1952.

Harry has maintained that he has a good relationship with the Queen, his grandmother, although he has suggested that the bond with his father, Prince Charles, has been damaged.

The Duke of Sussex told Oprah Winfrey in March he was “disappointed” in Charles, while saying that he and his brother Prince William are on “different paths.”

His and Meghan’s bombshell interview with the American A-list talk show host featured a string of shocking claims by the couple, including that one royal had asked “how dark” their baby Archie’s skin would be when he was born.

They also alleged that their security arrangements funded by the Firm had come to an end once the couple moved to North America.
