William and Kate savagely mocked by Australian press for ‘shirking royal duties’
Kate Middleton and William: Australian minister backs royal visit
Prince William and Princess Kate have come under fire for their failure to undertake more overseas travel, particularly in the Commonwealth, as their family commitments clash with their royal duties.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have continually made it clear that their three children come first, however Australian columnist Daniela Elser has warned that they may lose standing or respect amongst the Commonwealth nations if they continue to shun extended visits.
In a critical article headlined ‘Prince William and Kate Middleton turn backs on Australia’, she said: “If the Prince and Princess don’t pull their finger out on the Commonwealth front, then by the time they have matching thrones, the land over which King William V presides will be so reduced he will be able to fly from one end to another in under an hour.”
Ms Elser made the point that despite being the future of the monarchy, the Waleses appear less than keen to go out and get to know the people of all their realms.
She added: “If the Prince and Princess might be a little gun shy about venturing forth, out into these here Commonwealth wilds, well, that might be understandable.

“But, that does not excuse them from continuing to stay away, whether out of lethargy or nervousness or unwillingness to have to go barefoot on so many beaches.”
The last royal tour abroad that William and Kate made was to Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas in March 2022, which was marred by controversy due to protests over independence and slavery reparations.
This year Kate seems to have only left the UK a handful times, once for a royal wedding in Jordan and two trips to Marseille to watch England play in the Rugby World Cup.
In a savage takedown, Ms Elser wrote for news.com.au: “They [Kate and William] are meant to be the peppy, youthful face of the monarchy, if you can say that about two people in their 40s, who look like they haven’t seen the wrong side of 11pm since their wedding reception.
“The Prince and Princess are supposed to be the exciting future of the crown, all big ideas, slick Instagram videos and their new-found penchant for selfie posing.

“Except, that all that pep has not extended to their relationship with us [Australia], the far flung outposts of the Commonwealth.”
In August William was fiercely condemned for his decision not to fly to Australia to see the Lionesses play Spain in the World Cup final, although some defended him claiming he wanted to spend his children’s summer break with them.
Stirrings of republicanism have flared up again Down Under since the death of Queen Elizabeth last September, as it has been noted that Kate and William have not visited since 2014, when Prince George was a baby.
The last royals to visit Australia back in 2018 was Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, with Ms Elser praising them for playing an “absolute blinder” despite stepping down as working royals less than two years later.
Some have made the point that William and Kate cannot visit until King Charles and Queen Camilla do, as they have not been to any Commonwealth member as monarchs.
The King and Queen Consort will be travelling to Kenya on October 31 for a tour of the African nation, however for a couple in their mid-seventies it is not known how soon after they want to make another long-haul journey.
