The Prince of Wales, 73, is said to have resented his younger wife’s greater popularity with the public, an issue which would complicate their relationship. The “green-eyed monster” of jealousy raised its head during an official tour to Australia in 1983, where Diana was very much the darling of royal fans and the press alike. Prince Charles was reportedly miffed by the media attention and public adulation his wife enjoyed.
The Princess revealed to Martin Bashir in their 1995 interview that her husband had been stung by her dazzling success and popularity with the Aussie press and public.
“Now, if you’re a man like my husband, a proud man, you mind about that if you hear it every day for four weeks,” she said.
“And you feel low about it, instead of feeling happy and sharing it.”
She added she did not feel “flattered” by the coverage, “because with the media attention came a lot of jealousy; a great deal of complicated situations arose because of that.”
It is a fate that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have seemingly avoided, as they cement a marriage “based on friendship” and where each “enjoys the other’s successes.”
“They’ve got a solid relationship and she gives him confidence,” one friend who attended the couple’s 2011 wedding told The Times.
“There is no jealousy, no friction, they are happy for each other’s successes.”
William and Kate celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary in April, issuing a “home movie” to commemorate the event.
Commenting on their relationship, royal biographer Katie Nicholl said: “Watching them over the past decade, they are the couple who finish each other’s sentences.
