William and Harry followed royal tradition and joined the military after leaving their academic education behind, as their late grandfather Philip did. Like all royals with a military tie, the brothers were then entitled to wear the official uniform affiliated with their role during the appropriate royal engagements — including their own weddings, ceremonial royal funerals and Remembrance Day services. After choosing to leave the Royal Family, Harry was stripped of his honorary military appointments, meaning he was no longer allowed to wear a uniform to official royal events.

Prince Andrew — who retired from royal life in 2019 after extensive backlash over his connections to Jeffrey Epstein — would also be prevented from wearing a uniform at any public royal events.

Some commentators claim both royals had been pushing the Palace to make an exception, so they could wear military dress for Philip’s service.

However, the Queen has put her foot down just days before her late husband’s funeral — and ruled that all royals, including William, Prince Edward and Prince Charles, will be in mourning coats with medals, or day dress, rather than military uniform.

This decision is made all the more devastating because of the strong connection William and Harry formed with their grandfather through their time in the military.

Speaking on Pod Save The Queen this week — hosted by Ann Gripper — the Daily Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers explained: “Both the boys got on tremendously well with Philip and he taught them an awful lot.

“Not only their careers in the military — [but] he was fiercely, fiercely proud of them for that, they would ring him constantly when they were at Sandhurst, and beyond, about how they were getting on.

“And he was especially proud of Harry, for his two tours in Afghanistan.”

Harry served the Army from 2005 until 2015 and used to explain how he preferred being known by his military title of Captain Wales than as a Prince.

His love for the Armed Forces became clear when he set up an international tournament for wounded, injured or sick military personnel, called the Invictus Games in 2014, which is still operating today.

Philip served with the Royal Navy throughout World War 2, and had been pipped to have an immensely successful career on the seas — he gave it all up to support the Queen during her ascension to the throne.

However, he was awarded the title of Captain General of the Royal Marines in 1953, just before the Queen’s coronation.

He proudly passed this title onto Harry when he retired back in 2017 — but his grandson had to give the role up when he stepped back from the Firm.

Usually only those wearing a military headdress can salute.

But, as no royals will be in uniform, it’s not yet clear if those with a military tie will still salute the late Duke of Edinburgh during the ceremony.

A military source told The Sun that the Queen chose to ban all military uniforms at Philip’s funeral because it was “the most eloquent solution to the problem”.

There has been some backlash over the uniform debate.

Royal biographer Angela Levin tweeted: “Due to Princes Andrew and Harry throwing tantrums none of the Royal Family will be wearing military uniforms on Sat.

“You’d think the Queen and Duke’s exemplary behaviour wd [sic] have passed down.

“Their behaviour is shameful. The funeral is not about them. Actions have consequences.”

Even so, a Palace source claimed that Philip’s military affiliations will be incorporated into the ceremony.

The 30 attendees will also have to wear face masks and socially distance to follow lockdown rules.

William trained at Sandhurst military academy like his younger brother, except he worked with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force instead.

He worked with the RAF from 2009, and became a search-and-rescue pilot until he joined the East Anglian Air Ambulance full-time in 2014.

He left this role to take up more royal duties in 2017.

Both Harry and William made a reference to their late grandfather’s military past when they released separate tributes earlier this week.

The Duke of Sussex signed off his more informal statement with the Latin phrase, ‘Par Mare, Per Terram’, which translates as ‘by sea, by land’ and is the motto of the Royal Marines.

His older brother instead shared an image of Philip in military dress on April 9, shortly after the 99-year-old died in Windsor Castle.
