The Queen celebrates an incredible 70 years on the throne this year, and her Platinum Jubilee celebrations are expected to surpass the very high bar set by her Golden and Diamond Jubilees. Everyone is hoping the Queen will enjoy the Platinum Jubilee celebrations this June, but just how much we see of the Queen in public will likely be dependent on the monarch’s health.

Royal historian Marlene Koenig told Express.co.uk: “Everything hinges on the Queen’s health, especially her mobility issues.

“She won’t be taking the salute at the Trooping and there are several plans for the Noble of the Garter ceremony as she cannot walk in the procession or wear the robes.

“There is definitely a different feel to this Jubilee for several reasons. Elizabeth is the first British sovereign to achieve this milestone. She and Victoria both had Diamond Jubilees.

“However, at the last Jubilee, the Queen was in far better health (and ten years younger).”

Will the Queen give a Platinum Jubilee speech?

The Queen addresses the nation every year with a Christmas message, and she has been known to give a speech to mark key dates like the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 2020.

Many have wondered if the Queen will deliver a poignant speech this year to mark her seven decades on the throne, as there is a precedent for this with the previous Diamond Jubilee celebration.

Ms Koenig added: “The Palace did release a video speech from the Queen regarding her Jubilee.

“On June 4, 2002, she gave a speech at the Guildhall where she thanked the nation. So yes, a speech is likely, but it will probably be taped.”

In her Diamond Jubilee speech, the Queen told the nation she was “humbled” by the celebrations for her 60 years on the throne.

She added: “It has touched me deeply to see so many thousands of families, neighbours and friends celebrating together in such a happy atmosphere.”

The Queen also delivered a speech on the eve of Accession Day earlier this year, in which she renewed her pledge that her life “will always be devoted” to service.

The Queen’s statement read: “Tomorrow, February 6, marks the 70th anniversary of my Accession in 1952.

“It is a day that, even after 70 years, I still remember as much for the death of my father, King George VI, as for the start of my reign.

“As we mark this anniversary, it gives me pleasure to renew to you the pledge I gave in 1947 that my life will always be devoted to your service.”

She poignantly signed off her message with her hopes for the Platinum Jubilee, adding: “And so as I look forward to continuing to serve you with all my heart, I hope this Jubilee will bring together families and friends, neighbours and communities – after some difficult times for so many of us – in order to enjoy the celebrations and to reflect on the positive developments in our day-to-day lives that have so happily coincided with my reign.”
