Prince William and Prince Harry may have appeared “tension-free” during Thursday’s unveiling ceremony for a new Princess Diana statue, but a royal insider warns that it’s “going to take much more” before the two brothers lay aside their differences. The ceremony in Kensington Palace’s sunken garden marked the first time the two royal brothers had reunited since Prince Philip’s funeral in April.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl told Good Morning Britain: “They appeared tension-free and together for the first time since the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

“Does that signify a thawing of the rift? Personally, I think it’s going to take much more than a statue unveiling to sort things out but it is a baby step towards a reconciliation that the world wants to see.”

She continued: “If Diana had still been here today, I don’t think the rift would have got to this stage that it’s got. She would have literally knocked their heads together and said ‘come on, let’s sort this out.’

“There was a sadness to yesterday, as in here they were, the two brothers paying tribute to Diana’s remarkable and incredible legacy and yet that closeness, that once unbreakable bond has come unstuck.”

Relations between William and Harry have been strained since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to withdraw from the Royal Family in January 2020.

Since then, the couple have relocated to California and have participated in several media appearances, where they have openly criticised the monarchy.

During a 2-hour tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry spoke about his strained relationship with his brother.

He characterised the current state of their relationship as “space” and said they were on “different paths”.

He also said that his brother and father were “trapped” in the institution and were unable to leave.

The interview caused a PR crisis for Buckingham Palace, after the Sussexes made a number of damning allegations about the establishment and individual members of the Royal Family.

These included Buckingham Palace ignoring the couple’s requests for mental health support, which ultimately left Meghan Markle to feel suicidal whilst pregnant.

They also told Oprah that Palace staff had refused to correct damaging tabloid articles that were continuously printed about the Duchess.

However, the most damaging revelation was that a senior member of the Royal Family had made a racist comment about the skin colour of their unborn child.

The interview worsened relations between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the rest of the Royal Family.

Although Prince William and Prince Harry displayed a united front during the funeral of Prince Philip in April, private discussions between the pair were reportedly unproductive.

Since then, Prince Harry has been in California with his wife and young family.
