'Feisty' Meghan Markle missed out on Royal Family success

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are travelling back to the UK in early September to take part in events linked to associations close to their hearts. This trip will be heavily focused on Meghan and Harry’s charitable work, with their spokesperson saying on Monday: “Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are delighted to visit with several charities close to their hearts in early September.”

While no private visit to members of the Royal Family has been announced, Meghan and Harry have been tipped to stop to see the Queen if her schedule will allow it.

This would be Meghan and Her Majesty’s first face-to-face meeting since the publication in July of Tom Bower’s book Revenge, which included the claim the Queen reacted to news the Duchess would not attend Prince Philip’s funeral in person by saying: “Thank goodness Meghan is not coming.”

Buckingham Palace did not comment on this claim at the time but sources close to the sovereign questioned whether she would have anything other than her husband of 73 years on her mind on the day of his funeral in April 2021.

Nevertheless, commentator and former royal butler Grant Harrold said the publication of this alleged comment could make the meeting “awkward”.

But he can’t envisage either the Queen or Meghan discussing the topic at their next audience.

He told OK! magazine: “Meghan will have read what The Queen allegedly said about her not going to Prince Philip’s funeral.

“I don’t see Meghan sitting down with her and asking if it’s true.

“It’s one of those awkward things that will hang in the air and never be discussed.

“It just won’t be brought up.”

He continued: “The Queen is such a diplomatic lady, she’s not the type to bring it up.

“I think people forget that Prince Harry probably does speak to her so nothing will be a surprise.

“What will be interesting about this visit is that it will clarify exactly where the situation lies.”

Meghan and Prince Harry are to return to the UK in time to attend the One Young World Summit.

Scheduled to begin on September 5, this summit is taking place in Manchester and on its opening day will see Meghan deliver a keynote speech.

With the Duke, the Duchess will also meet some of the summit’s delegate who have been working relentlessly to the cause of gender equality.

On this same day, the winner of the Tory leadership contest will be announced, prompting the Queen to bid farewell to outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and ask either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak to form a new government.

The monarch reportedly intends to do so in person and in London, which would mean interrupting her yearly holiday stay in Scotland.

However, if her episodic mobility issues won’t allow this, she may also invite the new Prime Minister to Balmoral or carry out her duty via video link.

On September 6, Prince Harry and Meghan will fly to Germany to start the 12-month countdown to the new Invictus Games tournament, taking place in September 2023 in Dusseldorf.

Two days later, the Sussexes will be in the UK again to attend the WellChild Awards in London.

This yearly celebration of extraordinary children and young people living with serious or life-limiting illnesses is organised by WellChild, of which Harry has been the patron since 2007.

Last year, the Duke travelled alone to London in late June to attend the event, as Meghan had recently given birth to Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana.
