‘Will Harry pop in for a drink?’ Royal’s favourite nightclub to reopen after £3.5m refurb

The beach-themed venue, on 1 Dover Street in Mayfair, was one of the top London clubs of the 2000s. It was frequented by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with Hollywood royalty, such as Beyoncé, Jay Z, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

The nightclub closed its doors earlier this year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and is set to reopen under a different name, TABU.

The 6,000 square foot site, which has been completely transformed in the refurbishment, will reopen with a Japanese-inspired cocktail lounge and a Tokyo-inspired nightclub.

Mahiki changed hands in summer this year and is now owned by Asher Grant, who also owns popular London nightclub, The London Reign in Piccadilly.

Mr Grant told Express.co.uk: “Mahiki was one of the first clubs I went to when I moved to London as a young man, so the opportunity to re-ignite this famous venue was too good to pass up”.

The royals were regularly photographed coming in and out of the club in the late 2000s.

Kate Middleton, who was dating William at the time, and her sister Pippa were also spotted at Mahiki.

It offered a degree of exclusivity allowing the princes and other VIPs to let their hair down away from the media, as they knew the club owners weren’t going to call the papers.

William and Harry would often come and go via the staff entrance, or arrive wearing balaclavas.

There was also a roped-off area and a separate karaoke room allowing privacy for high profile guests.

A spokesperson for TABŪ said: “Mahiki occupied a top spot on the London party circuit for more than 16 years.

“But now, the Dover Street venue has changed hands; new at the helm is Asher Grant, who is also the owner of A-list favourite, The London REIGN show club.

“Asher and his partners have completely transformed the 6000 square feet site with a £3.5million refurbishment; the space now boasts a swanky, Japanese-inspired cocktail lounge on the ground floor, and an edgy ‘Tokyo night club’ on the lower level.”

Mr Grant told the Evening Standard, “We couldn’t turn down the opportunity to run a club that could make our careers, even after a terrible 18 months for the nightclub industries.”

But it is still “scary time” for the hospitality industry, he added.

“There was trepidation from all parties — myself and my investors. Reign was closed for 491 days and there were points where I was thinking about turning it into an ice cream shop or something.”

“But we went for taking on Mahiki and it feels very special to be opening such a huge club after a difficult year.”

One in eight venues in Britain have disappeared since the start of coronavirus pandemic, according to Bloomberg.

Before its closure earlier this year, Mahiki had been open for 16 years.

TABU will open its doors next Thursday.

There will be an entry fee but guests can book a 10-seater table for a minimum spend of £1,500.
