Wife of pastor who drowned in pool with two children 'utterly heartbroken'

The wife of a Christian pastor who drowned with two of their children in the Costa del Sol said all three could swim and claimed ‘something was wrong’ with the pool they died in.

An ‘utterly heartbroken’ Olubunmi Diya added that something ‘must have made swimming difficult’ for the trio.

Investigators are still trying to determine how Gabriel Diya, 52, Comfort Diya, nine, and son Praise-Emmanuel Diya, 16 died at the Club La Costa World complex near Fuengirola on Christmas Eve.

Previous reports in the Spanish media suggested police were examining the pump and suction system for a possible failure.

Operator CLC World Resorts and Hotels said inquiries turned up ‘no concerns relating to the pool in question’, adding the deaths had been the result of a ‘tragic accident’.

But Mrs Diya has since said in a statement to Sky News: ‘I believe something was wrong with the pool that must have made swimming difficult for them at that point in time.’

She added: ‘Our family are utterly heartbroken by the events last Tuesday, but we are comforted and strengthened by our strong faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

‘We are deeply shocked, saddened and struggling to come to terms with their passing.’

The statement also sought to make clear the three deceased knew how to swim, contrary to ‘inaccurate information’ in the public domain.

Mrs Diya added: ‘The whole family, all five of us went to the pool together and were all present when the incident occurred.

‘The children were not left unattended. We followed the instructions displayed by the poolside at all times.’

Her husband’s Facebook account lists him as a pastor at Open Heavens London, a Christian religious group with origins in Nigeria, based in Charlton.
