Wife of defence minister sent dirty nappy in post
The wife of a defence minister has been sent a soiled nappy in the post with a note reading: ‘Better check and see what your husband has been up to.’
Johnny Mercer, MP for Plymouth, shared pictures of the nappy on his Twitter account today. Noting his disgust, he wrote alongside the images: ‘I publicise this stuff not because I want sympathy – I’m very privileged.
‘But I do think people should be aware of what getting involved in politics is really like in 2020 Britain. This was mailed to my wife (not me) this morning. Tracked as well.’
Pictures of the nappy immediately sparked distaste among other Twitter users, with Good Morning Britain’s political producer Anne Alexander describing it as ‘appalling’.
Comedian Dom Jolly commented: ‘That is s**t’, while political editor of the Daily Mirror Pippa Crerar wrote: ‘Horrible. If it’s tracked hopefully you can find out who sent it?’
Mercer previously faced a backlash on social media after stating that he’d had a ‘tough week’ amid the government’s free school meals row with footballer Marcus Rashford.
The MP was among those accused of trying to ‘starve children’ when they voted against providing disadvantaged children with £15-a-week food vouchers during the holidays.
Following the vote, he had tweeted a picture of himself in front of a sunset in Dartmoor, along with the words: ‘Really tough old week in politics. No-one said it would be easy. But when you get to come up here for your end-of-week clear-the-head session, it all seems okay.’
