Why was Boris Johnson wearing a wheat badge?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson sported an unusual new accessory while speaking in Parliament today: a wheat sheaf badge.

A handful of other MPs also wore the pin on their jackets during Prime Minister’s Question Time.

Marie Curie has the daffodil, Breast Cancer Now have a pink ribbon, we wear poppies for Remembrance Day, and now The National Farmers’ Union has a wheat sheaf.

Why is Boris wearing the badge, and what does it represent?

What does Boris Johnson’s wheat sheaf badge mean?

The National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales (NFU) has asked politicians to #BackBritishFarming today by wearing a wheat sheaf badge.

NFU are aiming to highlight the importance of British food and farming standards ahead of trade talks with the US, and before an Agriculture Bill is passed in the House of Commons later this year.

The Union said: ‘There has never been a more important time to highlight the crucial role farmers play in feeding the nation and caring for the countryside.’

Some MPs have been showing their support by tweeting using the #BackBritishFarming hashtag.

What is Back British Farming Day?

Every year on September 9, MPs are encouraged to show support for British farming by wearing a wool and wheat sheaf pin badge in Parliament.

2020 marks a milestone for the movement, as it marks its fifth year.

British food and farming plays a large part in the UK’s economy, and he National Farmers’ Union is keen to protect the interests of our nation’s farmers.

With the fate of Britain’s relationship with the EU still awry and uncertain, there has never been a better time to support local farmers.

Who else has worn the wheat sheaf badge?

The iconic badge has become the must-wear accessory across Parliament, and has been worn by politicians of all parties.

This includes Labour Leader Keir Starmer, Priti Patel, Alicia Kearns, Mick Whitley, Alan Campbell, Matt Vickers, and many more.
