A royal expert has expressed his hope that Prince William’s environmental initiatives “cotton on” in future royal engagements as the Duke continues with his work towards climate change. During the recent awards ceremony for his inaugural The Earthshot Prize, Prince William and Kate arrived in an electric vehicle, whilst guests were asked to wear recycled clothing and enjoyed vegetarian and vegan snacks at Alexandra Palace.

Speaking of their use of an electric vehicle, ITV’s royal editor Chris Ship said: “An electric Audi I believe it was, which made a change from their usual Range Rover.

“I suppose what would be interesting is to see if any of this stuff actually cottons on for the future.

“If they can turn up in an electric car for this event, why isn’t one used for every event?

“If they can recycle clothes for this event and have vegetarian food or whatever it is to stop the carbon emissions from meat, why doesn’t it happen in every event?

“You wonder whether actually some of this stuff needs to be worked into the day to day rather than just focused on one big event.”

For the special event, Prince William stepped out in a green velvet jacket which he had previously worn at Centrepoint’s 50th anniversary celebration two years ago.

Kate joined her husband in an Alexander McQueen dress she first wore ten years ago in 2011, at a Bafta reception in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, famous figures such as Dame Emma Thompson and Emma Watson joined the royals on the green carpet in an array of recycled clothing.

Love Actually actress Emma Thompson called the fashion request “a relief” as she wore a green Stella McCartney suit which she had last worn in 2017 at Buckingham Palace to receive her Damehood.

Emma Watson wore a vintage gown which has been created from 10 wedding dresses that had been sourced from Oxfam.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the event in an electric vehicle and had ensured that guests were treated with vegan and vegetarian options of food.

In order to reduce carbon emissions, the staging and lighting of the ceremony was environmentally friendly and Coldplay’s performance was powered by 60 cyclists.

Prince William launched the decade-long The Earthshot Prize last year alongside Sir David Attenborough, and announced the winners at Alexandra Palace on October 17.

The Prize awards five winners with £1million each to advance with their innovative solutions in tackling the climate crisis.

In a video pre-recorded ahead of the ceremony, Prince William said: “We are alive in the most consequential time in human history. The actions we choose or choose not to take in the next 10 years will determine the fate of the planet for the next thousand.

“A decade doesn’t seem long, but humankind has an outstanding record of being able to solve the unsolvable … The future is ours to determine. And if we set our minds to it, nothing is impossible.”

The Duke of Cambridge will join other senior royals, including the Queen and Prince Charles, at the important COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in two weeks.
