The pair put on a united front in the royal box on Saturday after being plagued by rumours of a feud. Meghan Markle sat between Kate Middleton and her sister Pippa Middleton, in what is likely to be a carefully choreographed attempt to stop tongues wagging. Meghan and Kate chatted and laughed from the royal box as they watched Serena Williams be defeated in straight sets to Simona Halep, who earned her first Wimbledon title.

Ms Williams, a close friend of Meghan’s, had been hoping to equal Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam singles titles but the US star was thrashed in less than an hour.

The pair were joined by Prime Minister Theresa May and her husband Philip, Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker, Poldark actor Aidan Turner and Downton Abbey actress Lily James in the best seats at SW19.

It was the second joint appearance in a week for the sisters-in-law, but the two royals did not leave the All England Lawn Tennis Club together, as Meghan made a swift exit leaving the two sisters behind.

Meghan left the sporting venue at about 3.30pm – just half an hour after her pal was defeated.

Kate and Pippa didn’t leave the ground until about 6.30pm as they stayed to watch the Men’s Doubles Final.

But Meghan’s early exit is unlikely to be a snub to her sister-in-law, as she was likely keen to get home to baby Archie – who is almost 10 weeks old.

She does not have the same responsibilities as Kate, who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

The Duchess also could have left to comfort Ms Williams, after her unexpected defeat.

Meghan was also set to have a busy day on Sunday, the following day, as she joined husband Prince William for the star-studded premiere of The Lion King.

Kate wore a bespoke Dolce & Gabbana midi-dress to the Wimbledon tournament, while Meghan wore a crisp white shirt with a pleated Boss midi-skirt which had a blue and black pattern.

Kate attended the royal box the following day with husband Prince William, to watch the thrilling men’s singles final.

At the conclusion of the thrilling men’s final, which saw Novak Djokovic defend his title, Kate presented the Wimbledon trophy for the first time as Royal Patron of the All England Tennis Club.
