Every year the Royal Family gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate Trooping the Colour for the Queen’s birthday. However, in 2021 the event will not be going ahead, as was the case for 2020. Traditionally, Trooping the Colour is held on the second Saturday of June every year.  

For more than 260 years, Trooping the Colour has marked the official birthday of the British monarch.

Every year, the streets of central London are lined with well-wishers, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Red Arrows display over Buckingham Palace.

As part of the Queen’s birthday celebrations, Trooping the Colour also features a parade and a military procession.

More than 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together for the event.

Why is Trooping the Colour cancelled?

In 2020, Trooping the Colour in its usual format was cancelled due to coronavirus and lockdown restrictions.

With coronavirus restrictions still currently in place in England, organisers have decided Trooping the Colour should not go ahead again this year.

According to the Prime Minister’s roadmap, lockdown measures are expected to remain in place until at least late June in England.

Last summer an event dubbed “mini Trooping” was staged at Windsor Castle, where the Queen was in residence with Prince Philip, instead of the normal display at Buckingham Palace.

The palace has said options for an “alternative parade” are being considered at the Queen’s residence in Berkshire this year.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “Following consultation with Government and other relevant parties it has been agreed that The Queen’s Official Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, will not go ahead this year in its traditional form in central London.

“Options for an alternative Parade, in the quadrangle at Windsor Castle, are being considered.

“The annual Garter service, usually held in June, will not take place this year.”
