Prince William, Duke of Cambridge has been pictured wearing a white military uniform while attending the inaugural Commissioning Parade for service personnel from across the Caribbean in Kingston, Jamaica. Proudly showcasing his collection of military medals, Prince William can be seen wearing the elaborate suit alongside Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, but why is his attire so significant? What does it mean?

What is the Blues and Royals uniform?

The Tropical Dress of the Blues and Royals is also known as the ‘Officer and a Gentleman’ attire.

On Prince William’s left arm sits a golden eagle, known as the Eagle of the 105th Regiment of the Line, which was captured at the Battle of Waterloo and symbolises honour and pride.

Prince William’s wings are for flying in the RAF.

He also wears the ribbons for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal as well as a Garter star as he is a member of the Order of the Garter.

Why is the Blues and Royals uniform so significant?

This formal military suit is worn by members of the Blues and Royals regiment.

The regiment is made up of the Royal Horse Guards (RHG) and the 1st Dragoons, which join forces with the Life Guards to serve as the Household Cavalary Regiment in the British Army.

In 1969, the merger of the  Royal Horse Guards, which were then known as “The Blues”, and The Royal Dragoons, which was known as “The Royals”, formed The Blues and Royals.

Serving as the Queen’s personal bodyguard, the regiment is recognised as the most senior in the British Army, with Queen Elizabeth II acting as the Colonel-in-Chief.

Both Prince William and Prince Harry joined the regiment as cornets in 2006.
