The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is set to commence on Sunday, October 31, 2021. World leaders will meet for the 26th iteration of the gathering in Glasgow.

The meeting was postponed last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

COP26 has run for almost three decades, with global governments meeting to forge a global response to the world climate emergency.

According to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), every nation on Earth is treaty-bound to “avoid dangerous climate change”.

Why are church bells ringing for COP26 this year?

The Association of English Cathedrals is urging cathedrals across the nation to ring their bells on the eve of the COP26.

The Ring Out For Climate Change campaign is being led by Edward Gildea, a Christian Aid climate campaign organiser from Essex.

He is asking churches to ring their bells at 6pm for thirty minutes on Saturday, October 30 as a warning of the climate emergency and to mark the start of the conference.

He said: “We mostly associate church bells with the call to worship, weddings and very special national celebrations. But they also have another historic function: to ring out warnings.

“I believe the climate emergency is a time of real national crisis and I would urge all churches to ring out a warning and to remind the delegates of the urgency of the dangers we now face.”

The Very Revd Adrian Dorber, who chairs the Association of English Cathedrals and is Dean of Lichfield, added: “The start of the COP26 conference marks a serious moment of decision for the whole world.

“It is only right that cathedrals up and down the country add their distinctive sound to the call for those right actions that will sustain and help heal our planet.

“We are committed as a church to implement all the measures that get us to net carbon zero by 2030; we join everyone across the world wanting action and commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the whole creation. Faith demands it of us.”

Where is COP26 happening?

COP26 is due to take place in Glasgow at the SEC.

The SEC is Scotland’s largest exhibition centre.

The conference will last for two weeks, coming to a close on November 12.

What is due to happen at COPP26?

The 2021 UN Climate Conference will see 196 world leaders and 20,000 delegates gather in Glasgow.

They are expected to work together to commit to a reduction in emissions to avoid a climate emergency.

The meeting comes amid urgent calls to reduce global temperatures.

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change described global warming as a “code red for humanity“.

Under the Paris agreement, signed in 2015, nations agreed to try and limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2C above preindustrial levels.

Leaders are also “pursuing efforts” to limit heating to 1.5C.

These goals are legally binding and makeup part of the treaty.

Countries have also agreed to cut down the use of greenhouse gas emissions in the near term.

The UK has enshrined a new target in law to slash emissions by 78 percent by 2035.

The Government has also set out emissions commitments to bring the UK to net-zero by 2050.
