Princess Diana praised for omitting ‘obey’ from wedding vows

In an exclusive clip for special In Their Own Words: Diana, Princess of Wales, which premieres on Sunday on PBS in America, Travolta reflected on his famous dance with Diana. The dance took place during a royal visit at the White House with President Ronald Reagan in 1985.

Travolta said he went “with a very humble attitude to the dinner because he felt he was an extra in a room of very important people.”

Royal historian Kate Williams commented on the dance: “When Diana went to America in 1985, it cemented her place on a world stage. She was no longer this young, naive girl.”

She continued: “She was a huge celebrity, the most famous woman in the world. Di-mania spread from Britain across the world, and then it seized the world.”

The First Lady Nancy Reagan was involved in making the dance happen between Travolta and Princess Diana.

Nancy Reagan approached Travolta, telling him: “The princess, her fantasy is to dance with you. Would you like to dance with her tonight?'”

Travolta replied: “Well, of course.”

Travolta was nervous about approaching the Princess of Wales.

He said: “My heart starts to race, you know, and I tap her on the shoulder and she turns around and looks at me and she had that kind of bashful dip of her chin that she did, and she looked up at me.”

He added: “The whole room cleared. We danced for what felt like 15 minutes.

PBS spoke about the upcoming special in a statement. “Through interviews with many who knew her personally, a picture of Diana emerges that reveals what drove her to challenge the restrictions of her personal life.”

PBS continued: “Marriage to a man who loved another woman and a royal family that attempted to mold her in its image.”

The documentary includes new interviews with people who spent time with the princess including John Travolta himself, Debbie Frank and biographer Andrew Morton.

Debbie Frank, a friend of Diana comments during the special about Diana: “She never gave up on her marriage actually. She wanted to be this great team with Charles. She wanted to have more children with Charles, and he did not want to have more children.”
