Prince William is a keen sportsman who has long advocated the power of sport in helping effect change, transform lives and bring individuals together. Last year the Duke of Cambridge featured in a documentary called Prince William, Football and Mental Health as part of his efforts to launch the biggest ever conversation about mental health through football.

England’s “Big Six” football teams have agreed to join a new European Super League (ESL).

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are among 12 clubs who have agreed to the move.

These Premier League clubs will join AC Milan, Atletico, Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Uefa and the Premier League have condemned the ESL.

The UK PM has said, “no action is off the table”.

A Number 10 statement said: “The prime minister confirmed the government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop.

“He was clear that no action is off the table and the government is exploring every possibility, including legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped.”

Mr Johnson has promised the Government will act against the “ludicrous” new league with a “straight red”.

Mr Johnson threatened to push a new law through Parliament to ensure the new league could not come to fruition.

He said: “He was clear that no action is off the table and the Government is exploring every possibility, including legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped.

“The Prime Minister confirmed the Government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop.”

Downing Street has also not ruled out stopping players of clubs involved in the breakaway league from getting work visas or withdrawing police funding for match days.

But it is not only politicians who have called out the ESL.

Prince William has slammed the European Super League for the “damage” it will cause to the “entire football community”.

He tweeted: “Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community – from the top level to the grassroots – and the values of competition and fairness at its core.

“I share the concerns of fans about the proposed Super League and the damage it risks causing to the game we love.”

He signed the message, tweeted from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Twitter account, with a “W”, signalling it was a personal message directly from him.

Prince William’s message was liked by former England captain Rio Ferdinand almost immediately.

His comment against the ESL is the first time he has spoken out since his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday.

The Duke of Cambridge is president of the English Football Association and an Aston Villa football fan.

He has been spotted at many matches, including a match with Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George and Princess Charlotte in 2019.

In 2020, the Duke of Cambridge retweeted a video posted by the team, which showed locker room scenes after their game against West Ham saw them remain in the Premier League.
