Where in the UK is Storm Barbara headed to and what is the next storm called?

Parts of the country are set to be battered by heavy rain and strong winds in the coming days as Storm Barbara makes its presence known.

While the storm is not expected to affect Britain as much as other parts of Europe, you can still expect to feel the impact, with forecasters predicting 60mm of rain and winds of up to 40mph, as they’ve warned the strength and direction of the storm is still ‘uncertain’.

But just which parts of the country are most likely to be affected – and what will the next big storm be called?

Here’s what you need to know…

Which parts of the UK is Storm Barbara headed to?

Although the Met Office says the storm is largely set to affect Spain and Portugal, we won’t escape it completely, with heavy rain forecast to hit south-east and possibly central England on Wednesday.

Parts of the country could also see up to 60mm of rain as a result, rising to 80mm in mountainous regions.

Met Office meteorologist Frank Saunders said: ‘As we look ahead to the rest of the week, we are expecting rain or showers for many areas on Wednesday, possibly heavy and blustery in the South East.

‘It will be quieter on Thursday but more unsettled from Friday, with spells of wet and windy weather moving in from the west.’

The Met Office has also said that the storm has the potential for ‘severe gales to affect the extreme south-east of England’.

What will the next major storm be called?

Storm Barbara was named by the Spanish Met Service, and hence does not feature in the list of Met Office Storm Names for 2020/21.

The Met Office announced its storm name list for the coming year at the end of August, with the names as follows:

Storm Alex, which recently hit the UK, was named by countries in the south-west Europe naming group – namely France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal – and so does not feature in this list.

Instead, the list is used by the Met Office, Met Eireann and KNMI – the weather services in Ireland and the Netherlands to name storms based on weather warnings for the region.
