The government has outlined the priority order for the coronavirus vaccine, with care home residents and their carers at the top.

Once the UK’s ‘high-risk’ citizens have been immunised, the vaccine rollout will be extended to cover more priority groups.

The government has not yet outlined a definitive date for when teachers will be offered the coronavirus vaccine.

Headteachers and teachers’ unions are calling for them to be vaccinated before schools reopen.

It is thought that teachers could get the vaccine as part of the second phase of the coronavirus vaccine rollout.

The minister in charge of vaccinations, Nadhim Zahawi, told Times Radio last week that once the most vulnerable groups have been vaccinated, key workers could be next in line.

She said: ‘Teachers, police officers, shop workers, those who through no fault of their own other than the work that they do may come into contact with the virus in much greater volume, should be top of the list.’

This has not been confirmed by the Prime Minister. The details of the vaccine rollout beyond Phase One is yet to be outlined to the public.

How many teachers are there in the UK?

According to Gov.uk there are 453,813 teachers in the UK.

This is based on data collected from schools and local authorities in November 2019 as part of the School Workforce Census.

The data revealed that there were 905,845 people in total working in schools in England, with the figure also including teaching assistants as well as other staff members.

The figures also show that 221,153 of those are working in state-funded nurseries and primary schools, while 204,712 work in secondary schools.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has examined data on who suffers the worst outcomes from coronavirus and who is at highest risk of death.

They are thought to represent 90-99% of those at risk of dying from Covid-19.
