When is the next US presidential election and who is running?

President Joe Biden has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming US presidential elections.

Mr Biden said on Twitter on Tuesday: ‘Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms.

‘I believe this is ours. That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job.’

The President, 80, is the oldest presidential candidate in history, and would be 86 at the end of a second term.

With this news, many may be wondering when the next US presidential election is, and who exactly is running.

As the race for the White House continues, here’s what you need to know.

It will be the 60th presidential election in the States and will also be the first after electoral votes were redistributed during the 2020 census reapportionment cycle.

During this election cycle, Democratic candidate and former vice president Joe Biden won the vote alongside junior US senator, now Vice President, Kamala Harris.

Former President Donald Trump and other members of the Republican party attempted to overturn the results, alleging widespread voter fraud.

Attorney General William Barr and officials in each of the 50 states found no such evidence of voter fraud, though Trump still refused to cooperate in the presidential transition of Joe Biden.

Despite Trump saying he would never concede the election, on January 20, 2021, Biden and Harris were inaugurated.

Who is running?

Joe Biden has launched his 2024 re-election bid this week under the slogan ‘Let’s finish the job’.

His new promo offers an alternative America as the president continues his work on passing a ban on assault-style weapons, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, and codifying a national right to abortion after the Supreme Court’s ruling last year overturning Roe v Wade.

Former President Donald Trump is also hoping to return to the White House after he announced his candidacy for president for a second, nonconsecutive term on November 15, 2022.

If this happens, it would be the first presidential rematch since 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower successfully ran for reelection against Adlai Stevenson II.

If Trump won the vote, he would become the second president to win a second non-consecutive term, following in the footsteps of Grover Cleveland who did so in 1892.

Other Republican candidates for the election so far include Nikki Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and United Nations ambassador under Trump; Vivek Ramaswamy, a millionaire author and entrepreneur; and Asa Hutchinson, a former governor of Arkansas.

For the Democratic party, other candidates include Marianne Williamson, the former spiritual advisor to Oprah Winfrey; and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy.

They will all be hoping to represent their respective parties in time for the upcoming Presidential election.
