In a time of incredible hardship for the UK, Queen Elizabeth II has recorded a special message to be aired this weekend. Although unusual, in times of national crisis the monarch has been known to make a special address. In recent days there has been much speculation over whether the Queen would speak to the nation as it battles coronavirus.

Coronavirus has infected thousands of people in the UK and has sadly claimed the lives of many.

The virus has also hit close to home for the Royal Family, with the heir to the throne Prince Charles testing positive for the virus last month.

The UK has been in lockdown for a few weeks now, but the pandemic looks likely to continue for some time.

The Queen is expected to speak and provide hope to the nation on Sunday, and offer her sincere thanks to the workers on the frontline of this outbreak.

The Queen has pre-recorded a speech to the nation from Windsor Castle.

The Queen is currently residing at the castle with her husband Prince Philip.

The broadcast will air on Sunday, April 5 at 8pm.

The Queen addresses the nation annually for her Christmas Day speech, but broadcasts such as the upcoming coronavirus address are very uncommon for the monarch.

In the past, the Queen has addressed the nation ahead of the funeral of the Queen Mother.

The Queen also broadcast live to the nation following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, and during the Gulf War.

How have the Royal Family helped with the coronavirus outbreak?

Members of the Royal Family have all been playing their part during the coronavirus pandemic.

Prince Charles, who has recently recovered from COVID-19, opened the Nightingale Hospital on Friday.

Charles appeared via video link from his office on the Balmoral Estate to open the temporary hospital at London’s ExCel Centre.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William have also been playing their part in the UK’s coronavirus effort.

The Cambridge’s visited an NHS emergency call centre prior to the UK lockdown.

They also spoke to doctors and nurses over the phone this week to thank them for their tireless work during the pandemic.

In an Instagram post on the Kensington Royal account, William is heard saying: “We’d just like to say from the two of us how proud we are of all of you and how amazingly you are all doing under extreme circumstances.

“I know all of you will see this as your job and that you get on with it.

“But generally this is a different level and you guys are doing an incredible job.”

Kate and William’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have also appeared on social media, to clap along with the rest of the country for the NHS.

In honour of the NHS heroes working tirelessly during this outbreak, the Queen also lit Windsor Castle blue as a tribute.
