Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, have moved to California and left royal life behind. But that doesn’t mean they’re not still what the Queen called “valuable members” of the Royal Family, and they’re still said to be in touch with Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.
Before Harry met Meghan, he was known to be very close to his brother and then-girlfriend, Kate Middleton.
So it came as no surprise when, in 2011, he was asked to be the best man on their wedding day.
This was an especially sweet gesture between the brothers, as traditionally in royal weddings the best man post is held by a “supporter” of the groom.
Harry was also made ringbearer, with a special pocket fitted to his military uniform just for safe-keeping of the ring.
The wedding itself was something out of a fairytale, with Kate in a big white dress and William beaming proudly at his bride.
Harry nearly stole the show, famously whispering, “wait ’til you see her” to his brother – he’d already glimpsed the bride and couldn’t resist telling William how lovely she looked.
But, as with most weddings, it was during the speeches after the ceremony that the tears really started flowing – and the bride was no exception.
In her 2017 biography, Harry: Life, Loss and Love, author Katie Nicholl revealed that the Duke of Sussex’s best man speech had been particularly touching.
Speaking at the reception at Buckingham Palace, Harry is said to have given an “affectionate” tribute to his brother and new sister-in-law.
Ms Nicholl wrote: “It was affectionate, warm and funny and touched William deeply.
“And when he aid the couple’s decade-long romance was his inspiration… Kate shed a tear.”
Ms Nicholl shared some more juicy details from the speech.
She wrote: “The speech was peppered with Harry’s classic sense of humour, and he ribbed his brother:’William didn’t have a romantic bone in his body before he met Kate, so I knew it was serious when William suddenly started cooing down the phone at Kate.’
“Famous for his mimicry, Harry then impersonated his brother calling Kate ‘Babykins’, to much laughter from the guests.”
There were other touching moments reported from this speech.
At one point, Harry is said to have called William “the perfect brother” and said he loved Kate “like a sister”.
The three of them stayed close in the years after the wedding, launching their Heads Together campaign to combat mental health stigma and often seen out and about together.
But after Harry and Meghan decided to leave royal life and move their family to California, rumours of a rift overwhelmed the brothers.
In a 2019 documentary, Harry confirmed that things aren’t what they once were.
In ITV’s Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, the prince said: “Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under… stuff happens
“But look we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers.”
He went on: “We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and as I know he’ll always be there for me.
“We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy but I love him dearly.”
Still, he implied that the press had exaggerated the reality of the situation.
He said: “The majority of the stuff is created out of nothing but as brothers, it’s just as I said, you have good days, you have bad days.”
