‘What is so offensive about our flag?!’ Alex Phillips hits out at ‘heavy-handed’ Brussels

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage caused controversy with EU chiefs as he ended his European Parliament goodbye speech by waving Union Jack flags. His microphone was then cut for breaking the rules as the Brexit Party members continued to celebrate. Brexit Party MEP Alexandra Phillips attacked the European Union for their attitude towards this act.

She added the European Union should consider how it operates if it did not want to see other nations leave.

While on Sky News she said: “As a group we all decided that we weren’t going to have speaking time.

“We did this to ensure Nigel Farage had his.

“As soon as the little-national flags came out that was it and the microphone was turned off.

“But increasingly what we are seeing is not even federalism at EU level but just a desire to have the government of Europe.

“I don’t think that is in the interests of the 500 million citizens who live here.

“I think that if they don’t want to see more countries following in the UK’s footsteps and start breaking away from the European Union, they need to look at scaling back and devolving and actually respecting the plurality and individuality of the states that make up the bloc.”
