Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe sentenced to another year in jail

The British-Iranian charity worker has been detained in Iran since 2016 after being arrested at a Tehran airport in April 2016 and later convicted of plotting to overthrow the clerical establishment. Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s constituency MP, Tulip Siddiq, said on Twitter this morning: “I am very pleased to say that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been given her British passport back.

“She is still at her family home in Tehran. I also understand that there is a British negotiating team in Tehran right now.

“I will keep posting updates as I get them.”

According to her employer, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, her lawyer Hojjat Kermani, when asked whether Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe will be released, said: “I am hopeful that we will have good news soon.”

Why was Nazanin detained?

Nazanin is a 42-year-old British-Iranian mother, who has been arbitrarily detained in Iran for almost seven years.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested in Iran in 2016 on charges of plotting to overthrow the government – something she and her family have always fervently denied.

On a planned trip to visit her family with her young daughter, Gabrielle, they were about to board a plane back to the UK, when Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was stopped and arrested by Iran’s notorious Revolutionary Guard without an explanation.

The mother and daughter were separated, and the youngster was handed over to her grandparents while their documents were confiscated.

She was sentenced to five years in prison after a grossly unfair trial.
