Queen Elizabeth surprised the son of Prince Philip’s valet when she appeared behind him whilst he played on the Grand Staircase of Buckingham Palace. Stewart Pearce, now a royal expert, was flying paper airplanes when Her Majesty questioned ‘What are you doing?’ and brought him into her private sitting room.

Stewart Pearce told Royally Us, “I can remember loving being in Buckingham Palace. I would go with my father during school vacations.”

I also remember the stationary, it was a certain size and certain thickness of paper, I can still remember the smell and it would make the most amazing paper airplanes.”

“One day, my father asked ‘Where are you going to go’ and I said, ‘I’ll go to the top of the Grand Staircase’. He told me don’t go any further.”

“So, I was just flying my planes and I suddenly heard this voice, ‘What are you doing’ and I turned around and there was Her Majesty.”

Rather than berate the seven-year-old for playing games in the Palace, the Queen invited Stewart into her private room after recognising who his father was.

He continued, “It was tea time so she ordered tea for herself and hot orange juice, which I thought was a really weird choice. But I drank it and we had this conversation.”

Stewart Pearce’s father was Principal Valet to Prince Philip during the 1970s.

He died whilst shooting grouse with the Royal Family in 1976, with Prince Philip administering first aid.

Stewart Pearce has gone on to become a royal expert and is the author of the book ‘Diana: The Voice of Change’.

Aside from her own family, the Queen has often spent time with young children and is the patron of several children’s organisations.

Until 2016, she was the patron of Barnado’s and Save the Children and currently holds a royal patronage in over 600 charities.

She also has eleven great-grandchildren, eight grandchildren and four children of her own.
