In times of national worry, humans are known to search for sources of distraction for collective relief. Few could have predicted that while strong winds and heavy snow batter the country, Britons would become enthralled by the footage of a budding aeroplane enthusiast.

Jerry Dyer of ‘Big Jet TV’ has been entertaining hundreds of thousands of viewers (you read that correctly) with his live footage of planes landing at Heathrow Airport – often with some difficulty due to severe gusts.

Many have expressed joy over his excitement about planes touching down, with the occasional “bosh” and “you beauty” heard from behind the lease.

One viewer, appearing to hold a sentiment shared by many others, admitted “We’re gripped!”

The number of live viewers on the YouTube channel appeared to reach around 230,000, with Mr Dyer’s number of subscribers scraping close to 180,000 by 3pm.

One regular to the show, which airs two times a week, noted: “It was only 140K the other day.”

The distraction was welcomed by all in attendance.

Member Cheryl Clark said: “By far the best channel, thanks for this.”

Maz B said: “You guys have taken our minds off what is blowing all around us today so thank you!”

Sanj Sharma also joked: “More people are watching this than when Den divorced Angie.”

In the age of working from home, the live footage provided a break – perhaps too much of a break – from official responsibilities.

NatalieG1981 viewed this as a blessing, noting: “Thanks for this Jerry – makes working from home more entertaining!”

But The Lowi Family was preparing for punishment: “I’ve done NOTHING today Jerry. The wife is annoyed with me…”

The audio accompanying the video footage highlighted the strength of the wind on the ground.

At one moment, a particularly strong gust sent plastic containers Mr Dyer flying across a field.

In a sign of his humour that had led many to – and kept them on – his channel, he joked: “At least it’s not a shed and there’s not a Toyota Yaris parked in front of it!”

Explaining the difficulty for those attempting to land in such extreme circumstances, Mr Dyer said: “‘With such a strong headwind, the aircraft kind of still wants to fly.”

He added: “Pilots train for these moments in the simulator, but they can only train so much… Wind is a very unpredictable component.”

Viewer Sarah Sarviss joined in: “There’s also no one screaming in the simulator.”
