It was registered on 400 death certificates in England and Wales in the seven days to October 7, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). That is the highest weekly total since late August, up 39 percent from 287 deaths in the previous week.

Death registrations peaked at 810 in the week to July 29, following a surge in infections caused by Covid sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron.

Infections in Wales rose to one in 40 people, up from one in 50.
