Weekend washout as UK faces 60mph winds and thunderstorms

The UK is set for another wet and miserable weekend as torrential rain and 60mph winds continue to dampen the summer months.

Severe yellow warnings have been issued for thunderstorms in Scotland and Northern Ireland, while the Met Office also predicts strong gales for the rest of the country.

Music fans have been left devastated after several popular British festivals were forced to cancel due to the severe weather, including Boardmasters in Newquay, Cornwall.

And don’t be rushing to a beer garden any time soon because the unseasonable weather is set to last all weekend.

Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north east of England are facing ‘slow moving thunderstorms’ until midnight on Sunday, which could spark ‘torrential downpours’ and flooding in towns and villages.

There are currently sixteen flood risk alerts in place for England in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Cumbria.

The Environment Agency has urged people to avoid ‘swollen rivers’ and to not drive through flood water.

Meanwhile, the rest of England and Wales are set to be battered by strong winds and showers on Saturday.

Winds of up to 45mph are expected inland but coastal areas could face 60mph gusts.

It will also feel cooler on Saturday with highs of 23C, after temperatures topped 28C in the south east yesterday.

Luckily, winds are expected to ease a little on Sunday but it will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst explained a jet stream (air current) creating low pressure is leading to stormy weather instead of the sunshine and clear spells we hope for in August.

He said: ‘At the moment the jet stream is across the UK and this is allowing an area of low pressure to move eastwards bringing strong winds and outbreaks of heavy rain.

‘Normally this time of year we would expect the jet stream to be further north allowing some more settled weather.

‘It has been unseasonably wet and windy for this time of year.’

Mr Dewhurst said on Sunday further heavy rain is expected across Scotland and northern England, with elsewhere seeing a mix of sunshine and heavy showers, feeling a ‘lot less windy and warmer’.

But the unsettled weather is due to continue next week with a mix of sunshine and downpours.

‘Sunshine and showers on Monday and Tuesday, further outbreaks of rain on Wednesday, then that will be replaced with sunshine and showers on Thursday and Friday,’ added Mr Dewhurst.

‘Overall next week is fairly unsettled with showers and temperatures around average for this time of year.

Organisers of the Boardmasters music festival on Fistral Beach announced they were cancelling the annual event because of the severe weather forecasts.

Fans hoping to see acts such as the Wu Tang Clan and Florence and The Machine were left gutted after forking out hundreds of pounds for travel and tickets.

The surf competition however went ahead as the storms bring perfect conditions.

Another music festival, Houghton, in Norfolk, has been axed after the weather ‘dramatically worsened’.

The Bristol’s International Balloon Fiesta has also been scaled back and several weekend LGBT+ pride events, including in Chester, Plymouth and Milton Keynes, were postponed.

Holidaymakers at Luton Airport could still not escape the storm after relentless downpours led to flooding in the terminal on Friday.
