A man who lost his wife and daughter in a horrific road traffic collision has made a plea to road users to obey the rules of the road and avoid causing unnecessary road deaths.

Noel Clancy from Kilworth, Co Cork lost his wife Geraldine (58) and daughter Louise (22) in a crash involving another vehicle driven by an unaccompanied learner driver just three days before Christmas in 2015.

This afternoon the families of victims of road traffic collisions gathered at Parnell’s GAA Club in Dublin for a ceremony in memory of victims of road traffic collisions.

“We know that road safety measures work even though new road safety measures came too late for our loved ones,” Mr Clancy said.

“We plead with all road users – motorists cyclists and pedestrians – to be careful and considerate and obey the laws.”

Mr Clancy also said “pain and grief” was affecting the families of the 3,500 people killed on roads worldwide every day.

Some 130 people have fallen victim to fatal road traffic collisions on Irish roads in the past 12 months.

Broadcaster Sharon Ni Bheolain attended the ceremony and read out the names of all victims killed in the past year as families lined up to place a butterfly on a tree symbolizing the “beauty and fragility of life” which was this year’s theme of World Day of Remembrance.
