London traffic service Jambuster said: “A301 Waterloo Bridge (SE1/WC2R) (Both Directions) The bridge has been closed following an emergency services incident. Traffic is being diverted away. Seek other routes.” The closure was initially suspected to have been the result of an unexploded World War 2 bomb being found in the area.

An eyewitness wrote on Twitter: “Waterloo bridge closed as WWII bomb has apparently washed up on south side.”

Police confirmed that the object later turned out to be harmless.

Westminster Police tweeted: “Waterloo Bridge was closed for a short time at around 1200hrs after a report of suspected WW2 ordnance on the Southside of the river.

“The incident has been stood down.

“The metal object is harmless and has been removed.”

Unexploded bombs have repeatedly caused panic in the past, with Waterloo Bridge previously being closed in 2017.

Westminster Bridge and parts of Victoria embankment were shut while specialist officers carried out safety checks after the bomb was located in the river Thames.

Nearby undergournd stations were also evacuated as a precaution and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

The bomb was dredged up from the river, with Westminster Police tweeting: “Pls bear with us as we deal with dredged up suspected WWII ordnance #RiverThames #Victoria #Westminster.

“Road closures in area for safety.”

In February 2016, another unexploded WW2 bomb was found in Victoria station, forcing the evacuation of the area.
