Watch Rees-Mogg’s furious reaction to Ursula von der Leyen’s EU victory – ‘Stitch-up!’

Ms Von der Leyen won 383 votes in a secret ballot, only a little above the absolute majority of 374 she required to be elected. She had the declared backing of the three mainstream, pro-EU groups — the center-right European People’s Party, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats, and the centrist-liberal Renew Europe group. In a reaction video uploaded onto fellow Brexit Party MEP Michael Heaver’s Twitter, the two reveal why they are so infuriated with the result.

Mr Heaver said: “So, we’ve just come out of the European Parliament where Ursula von der Leyen has won a one horse race by nine votes.”

Ms Rees-Mogg added: “It’s an absolute stitch-up yet again from the European project.

“And she wants to make it even worse than it has been already.

“Dragging us into a common foreign policy, losing the veto and also having a European defence force to defend its borders.

“But what’s different to an attack force?

“And if you’ve got control of foreign policy, thats actually quite worrying.”

Mr Heaver concluded: “And it all underlines once again that we must leave in October at the very latest.

“Let’s get out of this thing.”

Meanwhile, Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage was even more vociferous in his condemnation.

He fumed: “She is a fanatical , fanatical EU centralist.

“She’s devoted to a European army.

“She absolutely wants the EU to expand, she wants foreign policy to take place without any nation state having a veto.

“She isn’t going to give an inch on the backstop – she’s made that clear already.

“But she is prepared to extend UK membership.

“I did say this morning in my speech that I thought what she was offering Europe was an updated form of communism.

“And I have to say, I did get quite a few boos and jeers for saying it.

“But that is what I genuinely believe.

“So that is the course of Europe for the next five years – it is more centralisation, it is more power to the European commission.

“There is no reform, there is no democratisation. This parliament has ben walked all over in this process over the last few weeks.”

Ursula von der Leyen clashed with Nigel Farage in the European Parliament as she said she would allow another Brexit extension if there were good reasons.

She said: “We cannot talk about Europe without talking about our friends from the UK.

“For the very first time, in 2016 a member state decided to leave the EU.

“This is a serious decision, we regret it but we respect it.

“Since then, together with the current government of the UK, the EU has worked hard to organise the orderly departure of the UK.”

The Withdrawal Agreement negotiated with Theresa May’s administration by Michel Barnier “provides certainty where Brexit created uncertainty”, she said.

“However, I stand ready for a further extension of the withdrawal date should more time be required for a good reason.”
