The Royal Family was plunged into crisis last month after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex publicly aired their struggles as working members of the Firm. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry also explained how they set up their own brand in the US by signing multi-million deals with Netflix and Amazon after being cut off financially from the royals when they quit their duties. But it appears their bombshell claims to Oprah may not have negatively impacted the Queen’s personal brand, according to research from Statista, which was commissioned for a True Royalty TV documentary about the Queen to mark her 95th birthday today.

Data estimated the Royal Family’s brand to be worth around £71billion, with the Queen’s personal brand worth roughly £35billion, putting the monarchy in the league of the world’s popular brands such as Coca Cola and also top Hollywood celebrities.

Kubi Springer, a brand consultant who has worked with Nike, L’Oreal and Rolls-Royce, said: “Nike, Ferrari and Coke, when you combined those brands together, the Queen’s brand has more articles than those three combined which is really powerful.”

The research for the documentary, called Elizabeth at 95: The Invincible Queen True Royalty TV, involved looking at the number of online news articles that included at least one mention of an exact search term, such as The Queen.

It then analysed the 37 most relevant people in nine different celebrity families and 10 global brand names between January 2017 and March 2021.

The research showed the Queen was 16 times bigger than singer Beyoncé and six times the size of reality star Kim Kardashian and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

The royal brand was also almost three times the size of talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

David Haigh, chief executive of Brand Finance, said: “The Royal Family refers to itself as ‘The Firm’.

“So, when we began analysing the financial performance of the monarchy, we took that same phrase and tried to value it as a firm.

“And we estimate the value of the business at about £70billion, which is about $100billion.

“That puts it as the most valuable UK brand. It’s a more valuable brand than Shell for example or Marks & Spencer and many other UK brands.”

The Royal Family has always been crucial for the UK’s economy, with reports saying the Firm bring in around £1.7billion each year through tourism.

The Queen spoke out for the first time today since the death of her husband of nearly 73 years to say thanks for the tributes paid to Philip.

She added the words of support from people around the world reminded her of the “extraordinary impact” the Duke had on people during his life.

The Queen said: “I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate.

“While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.

“My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days.

“We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”

The Royal Family gathered at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on Saturday to say their final farewell to Philip, who died peacefully on April 9.

Prince Harry flew over from the US in a brief reconciliation with his family, just weeks after his interview with Oprah was aired.

During the interview, he said he needed to find his own income after his father stopped taking his calls when he stepped down as senior royal.

He told Oprah: “I have what my mum left me and without that, we wouldn’t have been able to do this.

“It’s like she saw it coming and she’s been with us through this whole process.”

Harry then added he felt trapped in the Royal Family and shared his “compassion” for his brother and father Prince Charles being unable to leave their roles.

He said: “My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that.”

Meghan also suggested Archie was not made a prince because of his race, even though rules set by George V meant he was not entitled to be one.

Oprah asked: “Do you think it’s because of his race? I know that’s a loaded question.”

Meghan replied: “They didn’t want him to be a prince… which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security.

“We have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title.’ And also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

William was the first royal who spoke out publicly about the comments as he said: “We’re very much not a racist family”.

The Queen issued a statement saying “while some recollections may vary”, the issues would be taken “very seriously”, but dealt with privately as a family.
