Warm Friday weather could be last gasp of summer
Friday is expected to see the best of the remaining warm weather this year.
Temperatures are expected to top 20°C at the weekend as well, but Saturday and Sunday could be cloudier than the balmy 23°C Friday.
Before that, severe gales and squally showers are expected in the far north on Thursday, ahead of a mainly dry, warm and fine day in most parts of the country, with the best of the sun in the east and midland, the Met Office said.
After some patchy rain in the west during the day, Thursday evening will be mainly dry with some cloud and clear spells – but will be breezy in the north.
It is the outlook for Friday and the weekend, though, that will please Brits after a largely disappointing summer, and ahead of heavy rain on Monday.
Though largely cloudy, particularly in the west and north, forecasters believe sunshine will break through in some places, with temperatures hitting 22°C in London and higher in some Eastern parts.
Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon explained: ‘(Friday) will be fairly cloudy, with a risk of showers in the west and north.
‘The best of the sunshine is expected in the east, with up to 23°C expected, but widely high teens or low 20s elsewhere.’
He continued: ‘Looking in to the weekend, Saturday will still have plenty of fine weather around, although there will be some patchy cloud in southern areas and a more organised band of rain moving in to western Scotland. The breezy conditions in the northwest are expected to continue.
‘Sunday sees the chances of showers increase in England and Wales, with a risk of some thundery downpours in the southeast.
‘Where showers are avoided, there will still be plenty of sunny weather around, especially in the southwest and Wales.’

Next week is expected to feel far more autumnal, with blustery, sometimes intense showers passing over much of the UK and bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures.
But the unsettled conditions could see a northwest and southeast divide, with the latter likely to see drier and sunnier weather, compared to rainier conditions in the north.
Meanwhile, two flood alerts are in place in England, along the coast from the Cumbria’s St Bees Head to Millom and on the humber estuary near Hull, from Spurn Point to Winestead Outfall.
In Scotland, a flood warning was also put out for the Churchill Barriers.
