Wales lockdown rules: Is Wales still in lockdown?

Wales, like the rest of the UK, is still under lockdown restrictions. Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation on Sunday evening to provide an update on the latest plans for the coronavirus response.

The government’s message to the public has also changed to “stay alert”, with people in England being allowed to spend more time outdoors.

Wales, though, is sticking with the original message of “stay at home”.

In a video statement, First Minister Mark Drakeford said: “Our advice has not changed in Wales. Wherever you can you should stay at home.

“If you need to leave home for work, exercise or shopping, you should stay local and stay alert. If you go out, stay local and stay safe.”

He added: “The health of the public is paramount. It will inform our decisions and we will continue to inform you as we plan for our future in the weeks ahead.”

What are the lockdown rules in Wales?

Wales extended their lockdown by a further three weeks on Friday, with slight modifications to their guidelines.

Mr Drakeford said: “The first will be to the once-a-day exercise rule because the more we learn about coronavirus, the evidence shows us that the risk of infection is reduced outdoors.

“We will adjust our regulations to allow people to go outside to exercise more than once per day but we will strengthen our regulations to make it clearer that that exercise must be local.

“It should begin and end at home and it should not involve any significant travel away from home.

“Our second planned change to the regulations is to allow garden centres to reopen, provided the social distancing rules can be applied.

“Thirdly, we propose changing the regulations to allow local authorities to begin planning how to safely reopen libraries and municipal recycling centres.

“These very cautious changes will apply to everyone other than the 120,000 people in the shielding group.

“It’s really important that people in that group continue to follow the shielding advice they have received from the chief medical officer.”

From Wednesday, people in England will be allowed outside for unlimited exercise and can drive to different destinations.

But the Welsh government has warned people they are not to drive to Wales from England as the two countries begin to observe different lockdown measures.

Counsel General and Member of the Senedd Jeremy Miles told BBC Wales: “I want to be really clear about this.

“The position in Wales is very different from the position in England in relation to that.

“Our regulations do not permit people to get in their cars and drive to destinations in Wales and this includes people getting in their cars in England.

“We are not permitting that in Wales.”
