Videos posted to social media show mass brawls breaking out in the middle of roads while one person at the scene has claimed three people have been stabbed, though this is unconfirmed. One person has appeared on film alleging they were stabbed in the ear, saying “I’m pretty sure it was a Proud Boy”.

Riot police are also patrolling the streets, with videos showing them using bicycle to push back groups of people.

The most recent unrest has occurred in the evening, local time, but tensions had been simmering throughout the day.

Footage from earlier appeared to show supporters of US President Donald Trump being attacked with fireworks and other objects whilst they were at a restaurant.

It was posted by a Republican Senate candidate Lauren Witzke who advised viewers to “be aware and travel in groups”.

The unrest follows Mr Trump’s recent presidential election loss to Democrat rival Joe Biden.

The president has contested the election result, repeatedly claiming voter fraud has influenced the result. He has vowed to take legal action.

Within the last hour, Mr Trump has claimed left-wing protesters attacked people at a Trump rally earlier today but were met with resistance.

The president tweeted: “Antifa scum ran for the hills today when they tried attacking the people at the Trump Rally, because those people aggressively fought back.”

Meanwhile, Twitter user and journalist Madison Muller claimed Proud Boys members have appeared “armed”.

She said they “stabbed counter-protesters” and added: “The group Trump is referring to as ‘Antifa scum’ was severely out-numbered and police presence was much stronger on them than on Proud Boys and Trump supporters.”

One video shows a group of what are purportedly Proud Boys in Washington DC chanting “Break out Kyle” in what an observer says is a reference to Kyle Rittenhouse – the US teen charged with killing two protesters during political unrest earlier this year.

According to the BBC, Mr Rittenhouse told journalists at the time it was his “job” to guard nearby buildings.

President-elect Joe Biden has vowed to unite the US across its political spectrum despite the unrest.
