Tension in their relationship has affected members of the Royal Family, leading to speculation that it may never return to what it once was. The Prince of Wales, 72, is also understood to have been disheartened by comments made by youngest son Harry, 36, over the last few months.

In March, he told US host Oprah Winfrey that William is “trapped” in the Royal Family.

He said: “My father and my brother, they are trapped.

“They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that.”

Harry also said he is on a “different path” to William, 39, and “the relationship is space at the moment. And, you know, time heals all things, hopefully”.

A friend of the Prince of Wales told People he is “very hurt and upset [by the reported rift].”

They added that Charles is “shell shocked by it all”.

In the bombshell Oprah interview, Harry also said he “felt let down” by Charles, and described hoping for greater understanding from his father.

The Duke later seemed to criticise Charles’ parenting techniques during a 90-minute appearance on the American Expert podcast in May.

He told host Dax Shepard his father had treated him “the way he was treated” and that he wanted to “break the cycle” of “pain and suffering”.

Some royal observers interpreted Harry’s revelations as an indication of how distant he has become from Charles.

Appearing on the TV documentary ‘Charles & Harry: Father and Son Divided’, royal author Tom Quinn said: “There is no doubt the gulf between Harry and Charles had widened considerably.

“I mean I think if they are not careful it will be very difficult to bridge that divide in future.

“I can’t see how they can do it.”

Stewart Pearce, who was a friend of the late Princess of Wales, weighed in on how Prince Charles dealt with Megxit following Harry’s claims that Charles had stopped taking his calls.

He told Us Weekly magazine: “That’s what Charles does. He can’t deal with it because of his sensitivity, so he hides.

“And what Harry’s trying to do is to heal that. Not out of umbrage, not out of anger or revenge or criticism or accusation. I felt that he was just somebody saying, ‘This is the way that it is, and this is why we want to make change.’”
