Vegan who refused jab due to animal testing dies after two-week Covid battle

A vegan who chose not to get vaccinated on animal rights grounds has died of Covid-19 after two weeks in intensive care.

Glynn Steel opted not to get jabbed because of his moral opposition to using animals in the safety process drugs must go through to be approved for human use.

The 54-year-old tested positive for the virus in late October and rapidly deteriorated despite being put into a medically induced coma.

Leading vegan and animal rights groups are pushing for animal testing to be phased out but do not encourage people to refuse a life-saving jab.

His last words to his Emma, who is double-jabbed, were ‘I have never felt so ill, I wish I’d had the vaccine’.

She’s raising funds in the the wake of Glynn’s death and spoke out about his experience to encourage others with similar views to get vaccinated.

Emma said she is facing ‘an empty future alone’, adding: ‘He begged for the vaccine when he was in intensive care before he went on life support but they said that it was too late.

‘I’ve been crying myself into a dehydration every night, and letting the tears flow like a river in the morning and waking up in the night crying.

‘It’s having to tell people that loved him that they will never see him again, and seeing that pain in them. I’m used to trying to make people laugh, not cry.

‘He was a very gentle soul, he was a vegan and didn’t want the Covid vaccine because it was tested on animals.’

Glynn was a passionate advocate for animal rights, caring for six rescued cats and dogs at his Malvern home.

The field service engineer even brought a dog home from a holiday in Sri Lanka to care for it.

He came down with a cold and eventually tested positive for Covid-19, before ending up in hospital on November 2.

With no ambulances available, Emma had to get her unconscious husband to hospital herself.

She wrote: ‘I still don’t know how I got him in my car. He was so heavy that I couldn’t even push him in a wheelchair at the hospital.

‘Eventually a young lad appeared and offered to help, he was there because his mum was also unwell and couldn’t get an ambulance either, so he had to bring her to the hospital like I did.’

A week after being admitted, Glynn was on life support and died 20 minutes before it was due to be switched off.

Emma sat by his side in full PPE playing his favourite band, the Sex Pistols, to him during his final moments.

The Vegan Society stresses that ‘it is not always possible or practicable for vegans to avoid participating in animal use, which is particularly relevant to medical situations’.

The group ‘encourages vegans to look after their health and that of others, in order to continue to be effective advocates for veganism and other animals’.
