Vandalise the Cenotaph and you will be jailed, vows Braverman
Pro-Palestine protesters caught vandalising the Cenotaph will be jailed, Suella Braverman pledged.
In her strongest warning yet ahead of “hate marches” planned for the Remembrance weekend, the Home Secretary said: “If anyone were to vandalise the Cenotaph, they must be put into a jail cell faster than their feet can touch the ground.”
Her comments came as the war memorial was surrounded by barriers over fears it could be desecrated.
For more than a century, the monument has stood as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by the few for the many. But as it stood stripped of flags and shielded in metal, the forlorn image left many horrified.
Author Matt Ridley, a descendant of Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens, said: “As a great-grandson of the architect who designed the Cenotaph, I deeply
resent the fact it has to be fenced off and stripped of flags to appease yet again a baying mob that supports or excuses those who perpetrated a horrific atrocity.”
It usually bears six flags – RAF Ensign, Union Flag, Red Ensign, Blue Ensign, Union Flag, and White Ensign.
Last night, New Scotland Yard claimed these had been removed “for cleaning” ahead of the Remembrance Day service. They said the barriers were in place because of protests.
