Despite the country being in the midst of a new wave of Covid, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has lifted most restrictions in England in what has been dubbed Freedom Day. Mr Johnson is set to virtually hold a Government press conference this evening, where he will appear on a video link from his official country residence Chequers where he is in self-isolation. It comes as Downing Street urged people to be careful with the new freedoms in England.
However, Eric Feigl-Ding, a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington DC, shared his fury at seeing videos on social media of people partying in nightclubs in London last night.
He also ripped into the Prime Minister by saying “history remembers those who save lives” ahead of his warning to the nation.
Mr Feigl-Ding wrote on Twitter: “Dear friends in England — Lord have mercy on your family.
“Delta variant is surging – and your Dear Leader Boris Johnson and Sajid Javid have done the pandemicidal unthinkable.
“God save the Queen and her people — may history remember those who save lives vs allow folks to die.”
When asked whether Mr Johnson was relaxed about the scenes from nightclubs, his official spokesman said: “As far as I’m aware those nightclubs are operating within the rules.
“We continue to urge nightclubs to use the Covid pass to enable them to check whether people have been double-jabbed or have had recent negative tests – I think that’s in their interests and the interests of those attending.”
He was also asked whether clubs could be closed again if it seemed necessary.
The spokesman said: “That would be a significant step.
“Our approach is to work closely with those businesses and encourage them to use that certification.
“We are reserving the right to mandate certification in certain venues, maybe at a later date if necessary, and we will keep that under review.”
It comes after Mr Johnson tested negative for Covid today and is not displaying any symptoms of the virus after going into self-isolation at the weekend.

Mr Johnson, who has received both doses of a vaccine, is isolating at his country residence until July 26 after he was identified as a close contact of Health Minister Sajid Javid – who tested positive for the virus.
Mr Javid announced on Saturday that he had tested positive for the virus.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said he did not know “specifically” when Mr Johnson discovered Mr Javid had tested positive.
The spokesman also did not confirm whether the Prime Minister’s wife, Carrie Johnson, was isolating in Buckinghamshire as well.
However, he did add that Chancellor Rishi Sunak is quarantining in his flat above 10 Downing Street.
Mr Johnson’s spokesman said ministers had followed social distancing rules in order to have been alerted to self-isolate.
He said: “We do abide by the regulations and ministers have been taking the requisite precautions.
“It is down to NHS Test and Trace to decide what constitutes a close contact – there are broad guidelines but they may take other things into account.
“The Chancellor, Prime Minister and Health Secretary, as you would expect, have a number of meetings which can last more than an hour certainly, so obviously Test and Trace have taken that decision, but it is not for me to comment on how they came to that decision.”
