US-born Meghan Markle doesn’t ‘understand British culture and traditions’ says shock poll
Nearly four in 10 adults in the UK think the Prince’s American-born wife does not fully understand their country, while only 16 percent saying they believe she has a clear concept of their customs. During an interview while on tour of South Africa, Meghan was asked if as a woman of colour she held a unique position to “bring something new and interesting to the way the Royal Family” engages with the public. She responded by saying she takes her new position “very seriously” and acknowledged her “incredible responsibility” to represent the monarchy across the 53 Commonwealth nations.
And in another tell-all interview, the new mum said she had sought to “adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip” as she struggled to deal with the intense media scrutiny she found herself under.
But a ComRes ballot showed the majority of Britons are not convinced the 38-year-old has overcome the culture shock of moving across the pond.
Participants were asked to agree or disagree with the statement “Meghan Markle clearly understands British culture and our traditions”.
Thirty-eight percent (760 people) said they disagreed with the assessment, 17 percent of whom said they “strongly disagreed”.
A total of 330 adults (16 percent) said they agreed, with only four percent (74 votes) saying they “strongly agreed”.
Just over a quarter of those who had their say in the poll said they neither agreed nor disagreed.
And one in five votes (403 people) said they had no idea how well-informed Meghan was when it came to British culture.

During their first interview as a couple, shortly after they announced their engagement, Harry’s then-fiancee spoke of how she was restless to become engrossed in British life.
Speaking alongside Harry, now 35, she said she was keen to build on her previous humanitarian work and bring what she had learned to groups in the UK.
She told BBC News: “Now, being boots on the ground in the UK, I’m excited to just really get to know more about the different communities here, smaller organisations.”
And she denied she felt she was “giving anything up” when she chose marriage over her acting career, saying instead she looked on the decision to up sticks and marry the prince as “a new chapter”.
