Thousands are heading to Appleby today for the first day of a week-long horse fair, which was cancelled last year because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Due to restrictions easing on July 19, approximately 40,000 are expected to attend the annual fair over the next seven days.

The event, which sees gypsies and travellers from across the UK head to the Cumbrian village, is normally held in June, but was postponed this year and cancelled last year because of coronavirus.

Some of the town’s businesses have decided to close over fears of an increase in Covid cases because of the event, with the fair itself even offering people the chance to get a Pfizer jab or discuss the vaccine further with a clinician.

There has also been a safety warning issued by the RSPCA over the River Eden, where it is traditional for horses to be washed at the event, after steel bars were discovered in the water.

Part of the river has been cordoned off as the “obstructions cannot be removed” and fair organisers want the event to be as safe as possible.

A spokesperson for the Appleby Horse Fair Multi-Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group (MASCG) said: “As part of usual pre-fair preparations, a multi-agency effort has been taking place to clear the river and the river bed of any otherwise unseen obstructions or matter which could potentially cause injuries to people or horses.

“As part of that work, exposed steel bars have been discovered beneath the surface which were once part of reinforced concrete.

“Despite repeated efforts, the obstructions cannot be removed.”

They urged those attending the fair to avoid the area or face “signifiant risk of injury”.

The spokesperson added: ”As such, the section of the river where the steel bars are located has been cordoned off with tape and cones.

“The tape and cones will remain in situ for the duration of the fair.

“People are urged to stay outside of this area as there is otherwise a significant risk of injury.

“People are also reminded that, while efforts are made to remove hazards from the water, those who choose to enter the water do so entirely at their own risk.”
