Up to 1 million jobs already saved in first day of furlough scheme
“More than a million” people will have their wages paid with the help of the Government, Rishi Sunak has announced.
HMRC opened the coronavirus job retention scheme at 8am this morning.
The Chancellor revealed that as of 4pm this afternoon, over 140,000 firms have applied.
Mr Sunak told the press conference: “The grants they receive will help pay the wages of more than a million people.
“A million people who if they hadn’t been furloughed would have been at risk of losing their job.
“Firms applying today should receive their cash in six working days.
“HMRC will continue to provide updates on the number of people furloughed.”
